Sugar. Water. Student athlete health and nutrition.
As I am getting ready for my next talk on Sugar, I came across this great visual.
My oldest daughter Nikita is 14, a freshmen in high school and a very accomplished athlete. After playing many different sports in the past, her focus now is on playing school and club Volleyball and she also rides/trains horses. Both are her true passions, and so especially with Volleyball she spends a lot of time practicing. She is playing, practicing, working out, working with or riding her horse, every singe day of the week. She does not take days off as she does not look at Volleyball or riding as work, she loves it and has very high goals as far as Volleyball goes and so she spends all free time doing what she loves and perfecting her sills. If she does feel like taking time off, I always encourage her to listen to her body and do what feels right.
Anyway, being as active as she is, even playing 6-7 hour tournaments with no subs (as was the case last year) you will never catch her with a Gatorade or any other sugary “energy” drink in hand! All she ever drinks is water, herbal tea, and a very occasional, an absolute special treat – an espresso drink like latter. I talk a little about espresso vs. coffee drinks here.
Water is the best hydration option for the body! How can anyone think otherwise?! It is natural, clean no additives, water digested much faster than sugary drinks. Water is the basis of all life and that includes your body. Your muscles that move your body are 75% water; your blood that transport nutrients is 82% water; your lungs that provide your oxygen are 90% water; your brain that is the control center of your body is 76% water; even your bones are 25% water.
Our health is truly dependent on the quality and quantity of the water we drink. So why would you choose to give your kids sugary drinks instead of this natural goodness?
For kids athletes, the best way for continuing healthy grows, quick post-workout recovery and for maintaining a high performance, is a good nutrition, high in vegetables, lean naturally raised protein, fruit, nuts and tons of water. Nuts and fruit or a sunflower butter and wild honey sandwich make a healthy, natural and nutritious quick snack during long workouts, meets, competitions or tournaments. Nikita likes to bring a burritos or a burritos bowl (beans, brown rice, veggies, salsa, guacamole, etc) or a sandwich (gluten-free bread, organic turkey, goat cheese) for lunch.
She takes extra dose of her Juice Plus daily, and we do try and stay away from all medications and antibiotics. Our first step with any type of health concern is a natural remedies, be it tea compresses for an infected eye, cupping for cough, epsom salt baths for sore muscles, essential oils for pretty much anything, natural ointment for a boil/pimple, coconut oil for dental treatments natural remedies to boost immune system to fight a cold or a flue and many many more.
