Green Tea, Coffee May Guard Against Stroke
Green tea and coffee consumption may help protect against stroke and lower risk for cardiovascular disease.
I love my daily coffee, its actually an espresso drink. It usually is a shot of espresso and some steamed almond milk. Some days I skip it, just don’t feel like one. Most days that is what I have and I only have one, again just because I never feel like more.
Is coffee good for you or bad for you?! everyone has a different opinion. I drink it not because it is good or bad, but because I like it, it gives me joy to have my coffee. I believe in happiness, balance and moderation. If it makes you happy, if you balance it out, more good – less bad, and do not overdo it, then go for it!
Today as I am enjoying my coffee 😉 and going over my daily research articles I find this uplifting study overview on preventative effects of green tea and coffee against stroke.
A study was done in Japan and apparently those drinking as little as 1 cup of coffee daily had a 20% lower risk of a stroke and drinking 2-3 cups of green tea daily had a 14% lower risk for any stroke while those who consumed at least 4 cups had a 20% lower risk.
One interesting think to consider is that in US we drink a lot more coffee and less tea. In my family we do drink tea daily, it is a tradition I was raised with in Russia, and so we do have herbal, white or green tea after dinner. A lot of tea! We make a huge tea pot and between Konstantin (my husband) and I we probably have 3-4 cups each. Kids like it as well.
Victoria J. Burley, PhD, senior lecturer in nutritional epidemiology, School of Food Science and Nutrition,University of Leeds, United Kingdom, who wasn’t involved in the study, called it “very interesting.”
She noted that “both high-fiber foods and these particular beverages may have anti-inflammatory properties. Whole grains, fruit and vegetables, and these beverages are all rich in polyphenols, which appear to have multiple potential actions on markers of CVD risk: blood pressure, glucose homeostasis, lipid metabolism, and so on.”
“Overall, it’s encouraging data that suggest people who incorporate coffee and green tea in their diet may experience lower CVD risk in later life.” she added.
Susanna C. Larsson, PhD, from the Unit of Nutritional Epidemiology, Institute of Environmental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden, found it “interesting that such a small amount as 1 cup of coffee per day reduces the risk of stroke by 20% (quite a large reduction in risk).”
“Otherwise, this Japanese study confirms results from studies conducted in the US and Europe showing an inverse association between coffee consumption and stroke risk. This study adds further support that moderate coffee consumption may lower the risk of stroke,” said Dr. Larsson, who was not involved in the study.
Bottom line – enjoy your daily coffee and one cup should do it, and if you do not drink tea, it may be a good idea to try and perhaps replace those other cups of coffee that you usually have. And again – balance and moderation! Too much of even a good thing can be dangerous, as I mention in this article – too much tea causes an unusual bone disease.
